Leaving aside that I hate the option being available in the first place*, how does it work? Do I have to pay him for the duration of his new contract, his old contract, or the rest of the season in which he's sold?

*He tells me he wants to seek fresh challenges -- fine, but I don't see why I have to pay for his holiday

The duration of his current contract with you. So if he’s got a year left on his current contract, it will be for one year
