Every game created by a developer always has features that make you think these are important, they won't tell you how important they are. Its all a part of game design. You look for aspects of the game that drive emotion, that is the first part towards creating immersion. A player can choose to feel a certain way when they want to, but this too allows us to take the high road and wield imaginary big sticks and frozen water bottles. Its all part of the game.  So I just treat it that way, get angry with said player on the pitch, throw out an imaginary frozen bottle at him. or I could yell at the pixel and then feel vindicated for some strange reason.  It has its funny moments.

I remember I once had a player moaning and complaining, he was actually a wonderkid. He wanted a bigger contract, a lamborghini and a WAG, so I packed him off to Ajax on loan. He actually came back a better player. I just treat the "simulation" for what it is... an escape.

The fact that we can get ANGRY at an algorithm sometimes paradoxically gives me joy. It's just a game, even if you're playing it 40 hours a week. "NO, you can't have another raise after one year of a three-year contract" I will shriek, and then I go look at his production and what everyone else is making and grumble under my breath "Okay, maybe you deserve a little bump, it's not like it's coming out of my pocket"...

  2. MIGHT be also tied to your Adaptability score?  Or if you pick a club to start with, and there are pre-existing German players on the squad, the game gives you some language familiarity?  If I'm planning on doing a journeyman save, I do give myself some extra points in Adaptability in hopes of learning the local language quicker and sometimes the press will even refer to me a a polyglot.

I know that when I create a manager with American nationality, it doesn't matter where I'm managing, I automatically get fluency in Spanish (and I can't speak a lick of Spanish outside of ordering a taco combo platter.) Where I live (Kansas), it was mostly settled by German immigrants (in fact 3 of my 4 grandparents are of German ancestry), so I should automatically get German as a second language.

  3. Since I leave it up to my assman, I've never understood why he then comes to me to say someone's complaining about training...so...YOU fix it. Honestly, I'm sure it's tied to their hidden attributes or personality type, but you know what, lad? You're PAID a silly amount of money to be here and play a game and if Tuesdays are "leg day", you get your little rump out there and run when I tell you to run, or you'll be riding the pine in the reserves. (Literally, the bench at the reserves field is unfinished pine boards, no fancy padded airline seats for them!)

as someone who has played every version of this game since the early 90s it is now just ridiculous, it used to be enjoyable, not anymore. For the love of god, help.

So wait, you've been playing this for 25+ years, EVERY version, and just now, this edition, you're giving up and demanding a refund? Overly-dramatic much? One save doesn't go the way you expected it to and it's suddenly the game's fault? Why not just blame VAR or the referees?

  5. My current save, I put my actual birthdate in for my manager, and now 10 years into the save, all my "contemporaries" are retiring and I'm having to hire these young bucks that are my kids age, and you CAN'T TEACH THEM ANYTHING! I'm trying to win the Champions before I start collecting Social Security...

I'm looking forward to playing most matches in front of 8 people, having a £9 wage budget, and probably having half my squad leave suddenly when they realise Tesco are paying more.

I generally start every year with a LLM save where the team's amateur, they have 3 season ticket holders, and anyone who shows a hint of promise is snapped up by a paying club for no transfer fee, so I'm perfectly comfortable in that world.

  7. regarding XG: Have you ever seen another player who has an XG at club level of 26? Since Benfica is obviously NOT scoring anything close to that, is it some sort of statistical mutation/glitch? Or is Willem "The Mighty Thunderfoot of Doom" Mambo simply an outlier (just call me "Hype man" Podunkboy)

Can you not just choose not to talk to the other team when you are advised that he is not playing in the correct position?

Except after a couple warnings you get the "action required" because the player's upset...because he's playing 10/10 games. The strange thing is, I won't even negotiate a contract with a player who demands a specific role and position, so if I tell a loaning manager I want the player at MC, I really don't care what role they're playing at MC, because I actually want them well-rounded. Now if I tell them I want them at ST and they keep playing them at AML, then we have to have a chat.

  9. Almost every time I send a player out on loan, and the agreement is to play the player as a center mid, I get whining complaints the entire loan period because they loaning team plays the player as an "advanced playmaker" or "mezzala" or "roaming playmaker" instead of just "CM" My attitude is "hey, he's getting 26-30 starts on loan, his player rating is 7.25, and he's apparently happy with the AMOUNT of playing time"...but then I have to have a chat with the loaning coach because the whiny little twerp isn't getting his frighteningly-non-specific play as CM. If the player wasn't demanding to go out on loan in the first place, he could play in the position he wants, but once he leaves the club, I have ABSOLUTELY no control where he's played.  And the times when I've recalled them because they're upset...the team they just left comes in with another loan bid to play the player in the same position where I know he's not going to end up playing.

  10. I thought initial budget for the next season is set as soon as your team clinches final league position or continental qualification. That's when I start dumping the deadwood and signing players whose contracts are ending. If the board has given you a zero transfer budget and are refusing to up it...that's when I wreck the team and move on. Send the starting 11 out on "no recall" loans, give players new contracts with easily-reachable clauses with huge balloon payments, terminate all the qualified staff and resign without notice.

  11. Must...not...give...in...and...order...a...Curacao...National...Team...t shirt...but the need is strong and my will is weak...but my wife will kick me out if I buy another soccer shirt and try to explain it off as "there's this sign-up on the football manager forum and I have this player from Curacao named Willem Mambo and..."..."get out! And take that shirt WITH YOU!"

  12. What's annoying is to do a search with "realistic appointments", find a staff member with good attributes who's NEVER held a job (and it's several years into the save), you approach them and they give you the "not interested because you're not of a level or potential level that interests me". So...you'd rather remain unemployed instead of taking a job where your status and reputation might climb and you could then get a legitimate offer deserving of your vast skills and knowledge?

I just got turned down for a job because of my "complete lack of experience in guiding teams away from relegation", even though I twice got teams picked for relegation promoted and just took AFC Telford, picked for relegation to a 7th place finish in the Premier League. HOW does that not qualify?

And then, Hull (4th place in the Championship, 29/46 games already played) lets me interview with them, even though, once again, I have no experience guiding teams away from relegation. YES, Hull was picked to finish 20th at the start of the season, but at this point in the season, they could lose their last 17 games and I'm not sure they'd even be relegated. And 10 years into the save, I've never even THREATENED relegation. The employment process in this game is hopelessly broken.
