  1. Something I've craved for years is the ability to designate substitute slots so that my AM, when he picks the team, picks someone appropriate to the position. Sorting out the subs, especially during the friendly season, can be an almighty pain. So --

For friendlies, all slots position-specific, plus #12 free for any role

For league & cup, maybe GK + 2 defender + 2 midfield +2 forwards, or something more fine-grained.

    It's tactical

Uhuh. That's interesting; I've been worrying over that overlap issue on the right, and thought of the IWB option, but there are precious few players who can play the role, so far as my scouts can see. I suppose one option is to set the forward position to IW or IF. I'll look into that some more, because my backs have all been recruited as wing-backs.

20 of the 32 clubs at that stage are Premier League clubs

True, but half or fewer would be tough draws for a top-half team. I'm keeping an eye on it, next round of Carabao if we go through, and the FA cup.

    @Dagenham_Dave: :D

  5. there's something going on here, so I saved a couple of days before the draw (Carabao cup, 3rd round). Successively, I got Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal... Reading (Championship side in 2029), on the fourth attempt. I'll take that.

But I seem to get top-rated clubs in cup draws more frequently than probability would suggest. When I got OL into the Champions Cup, we got Barcelona and Milan -- and here I am at Newcastle (we finished 3rd last season), and we get Milan AC, Real Madrid and Ajax.

  6. I'm wondering: what is people's experiences regarding unsuccessful applications. I'm thinking particularly of jobs you fancy, and which you might get later in your career if not now. I can't remember a time when, having applied, been interviewed, and then rejected, that a subsequent opportunity at the same club had a different outcome.

Example: I'm currently at Newcastle, just starting second full season, having started in November, so a year and a half behind me. We've qualified for the Champions cup, and for other reasons I'm in no rush to move on, although the poor youth recruitment seems to be chronic. Anyway, the Barcelona job came up; I applied, was the fan's choice, and got the interview, but they went with someone else.

Question: as I fancy that job one day, would it be better to stay out of it for now, and wait for a future opportunity? Spoiler alert: I didn't get the job.

As an aside, I've noticed that FM seems to have the big clubs go for someone in their 50s or 60s, which seems less like real life than it used to.

  7. Picking up a couple of these points: my main home & away tactics are positive/balanced. My third is cautious, but that's as low as I'll go. As others say, you're  just laying out the welcome mat if you specify defensive. Sometimes, when there's nothing to lose (highly likely to get beat anyway, I mean, not end-of-season mid-table kickabout), I'll go into an away match with the positive tactic, just to keep things interesting. Still, there are rare times in a game when switching to defensive can be the way to go.

AI is doing its best, but the more information you give it, the more it will try to interpret. I play control possession, but I get rid of 'work the ball into the box' because they just dither and faff about when they get there, instead of shooting. I think IRL too, too many instructions leads to confusion.

  8. You're complaining about Tottenham losing at Anfield? :D "Here come the Drury Lane Tap Dancers", I think is how Bill Shankly looked forward to Tottenham's visits.

Mind you, I feel your pain. I had two matches there in two weeks, cup and league, with Newcastle (at the time 3rd in the league behind Liverpool & Chelsea), and lost both times.

  9. Leaving aside that I hate the option being available in the first place*, how does it work? Do I have to pay him for the duration of his new contract, his old contract, or the rest of the season in which he's sold?

*He tells me he wants to seek fresh challenges -- fine, but I don't see why I have to pay for his holiday

  10. That's interesting (in my current save I had Lyon only after starting at Auxerre and moving to Bordeaux).

Generally, I find that this version of FM has improved the tactical briefing, and my AM's advice is usually sound, if often overcautious. I look for high tactical knowledge in an AM -- current on has 15 TK and 16 tactical coaching. It's good to know that small adjustments can make a difference.

  11. I was wondering to what extent you can really 'take them by surprise' with tactical changes and adjustments? I just played Liverpool at Anfield twice in a fortnight (cup & league), and went with sharply different tactics on the second occasion. Lost both 1-0. (We're currently 3rd or 4th in the league, so its not wildly optimistic to hope for a draw at least)

Press is always asking if they can expect a tactical surprise (has been asking that for as long as I've been playing FM :) )
